Tyrone's Story

...my coaches were all father figures to me.  If it wasn't for them, I know that I would not have lived past 27 years.  The only one thing that I regret is that I jacked my grades up big time.  I led my team in touchdowns for 3 seasons, but I was barely scraping by in class and I was ditching like every other day.  It was cool to hang out in the hallway and chit chat with the homey's and holla at the girls, but that never bothered me then as it does now.  Matter of fact, its crazy to think, but those girls I used to holla at, the one girl is a prosecuting attorney for the criminal justice system and the other girl is some manager of  a Fortune 500 company.  I just couldn't believe that my boys and I missed Examplegoing to class to try to talk to some girls and not goto class to listen and take notes.  Then I tried to call my boy Darrell and it took a while but finally he called me from the message I left with his grand ma.  He's the Regional Marketing Director for a sporting goods company out in Los Angeles.  I was blown away, because we always hung out together, I guess I didn't know what his grades were, but apparently he went on to Georgetown and paid his way for 2 years and when he got high grades he got a scholarship the rest of the college even into grad school.  Our other homey we was cool with, Greg, was married with 3 kids and owned a clothing store in Downtown Cincinnati.  I guess what really gets at me is that Greg was always trying to get me to goto college and I kept telling him yeah right like they would accept me.  So not only did I not get any college offers because my grades were just borderline and I was barely eligible to play in high school, I actually waited too late to take the college admission test more than the one time I took it.  Here I am now, working at the airport as a baggage handler making $11 per hour hauling luggage in the rain, sleet, snow, with no days off not even the holidays because that's our busiest time.  But I regret not paying attention in high school, trying to kick it with my boys and while I was struggling and getting D's my boys were getting B's and C's and went onto college and grad school and those chicks we used to try to hook up with make more money in a month that takes me 6 months to make.  Sometimes I just wish I listened to my coaches and my parents, especially my teachers that were trying to get me to read a dag on book.

My advice to kids in high school or where ever, get your grades in order, listen to your parents and coaches.  its a shame to think you're making friends with your boys but they are trying to get out of the hood on the sly.  Then you're gonna be stuck in the same place, doing the same things, without no chance to get those years back.
