Melissa's
Story

... my parents to not fight
about what college they want me to goto. I know that I want to goto
college, but with so many choices here in Texas I don't think I even want
to be here. I feel like I'm more of a cold-weather girl than being
in this heat all the time. My dad wants me to go to University of
Texas because its close to home and they'll be able to come to my games.
My mom wants me to goto UCLA because they are the top ranked women's
volleyball team in the country year after year. But me, I actually
want to goto University of Connecticut. They have a bunch of seniors
this year and like a handful of juniors which means I could get the
opportunity to play right away if not within 2 years, then I can train for
the Olympic team and the US National team which I was recruited for
before. My biggest problem is my parents pulling me here and there,
I just want to be me. If it wasn't for sports honestly, I don't even
think my parents would even notice me. I know they would notice me
since I'm tall, but as an only child lots of times I feel as though they
just are ready to get rid of me and want me to get out of the house.
Which is cool, but between them fighting every night about where I should
goto college and the coaches calling me from the east coast schools, I
don't want to disappoint my parents. Most likely, I'm just going to
enroll at UCLA. I know they will provide me with the opportunities
that I want and they have the major I want as well.
Of course, the best thing
about my situation is that I have my parents to thank for introducing me
to sports and doing something with my height. Otherwise, I
don't think I would fit in anywhere because not too many guys are going
for amazon women. The days that I get depressed about being too tall
and listening to my parents fight all the time, I go out side and either
play basketball or spike the ball against the wall at the park.
Without sports I wouldn't have any other way to relieve my frustration.
So maybe going to UCLA won't be all too bad. Pretty sure that my
parents will be able to come see me, but I really can't wait to get a
change of scenery and learn from the best volleyball team
in the country.
My advice to kids is to follow
your dream and do the best you can and after you're done doing the best,
ask for help from your parents or coaches to help you do more.
Especially with your grades, because without having the grades its
difficult for colleges to
want to pursue you to play on
their team or even offer you a scholarship.
