Jaki Johnson
In middle school recess was Jaki Johnson’s favorite
subject. The sound of the bell resonating through the hallway sent
excitement through her body like an electric jolt. Once her saddle shoes
hit the blacktop, she was queen. She could run, jump, and throw just as
well as the squeaky-voiced boys in her 6th grade class. When
she entered high school, she tried out for Varsity cross-country, track and
field, swimming, and field hockey and made each team.
Upon graduation in May 2003, she was awarded the Most
Promising Artist award to attend the University of the Arts in Philadelphia
for communications. Jaki left behind all her ribbons, medals, and awards
pinned on her wall in Baltimore, MD, packed up her father’s red 1957 Chevy
pickup truck, and headed for Philly. It was a hard transition from being
well-known for speed to not being known at all. UArts did not have track
and field or swimming. Instead there were try outs for the fencing and
dodge ball team. Toward the end of her first semester, Jaki shocked
everyone by enlisting into the PA Army National Guard as a Chemical
Specialist. The following summer she was in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO with
drill sergeants in her face, learning hand-to-hand, and dreaming of becoming
a drill sergeant herself. The summer of 2005 Jaki felt she was called to do
the Lord’s work and found a job in the military that would enable her to do
so. She changed her MOS (military occupation specialty) to Chaplain’s
Assistant and she was sent to Ft. Jackson, SC to complete her training and
was assigned as Student First Sergeant. This opportunity to be Student
First Sergeant changed Jaki to be an active listener, take direction, and
turn into a more focused and determined soldier. She applied these new
traits to her civilian life: never leaving an assignment undone,
punctuality, and organization. In October 2006, Jaki applied to Bally Total
Fitness as a personal trainer. She used the skills and effective techniques
she learned through the military on her clients. She loved to make her
clients sweat and was affectionately named “MYS Jaki” (Make You Sweat.)
During her time there, she became interested in taking courses in becoming
an aerobic instructor and teaching boot camp classes.
She wants to take her enthusiasm for sports, training,
and education and influence the student-athletes to reach beyond the
standard and strive for perfection. Jaki believes that there is no good
training without hard-fun training. Her military background has taught her
to pay very close attention to detail and that teamwork is the key to
success. Jaki owes a lot of her character development to the military and
is currently training to become Master Fitness Trainer for her unit. The
4-week course in Ft. Benning, GA will focus on running, endurance,
flexibility, and how to decrease the chance of injury doing military tasks.
She feels that she is up for the challenge and is looking very forward to
it.
Jaki has a soft spot for animals and says that if she
had not wanted to become a writer, she would have gone to the University of
Florida for veterinary medicine. Instead, she has decided that after
graduating from college she will start her own doggie day care center in
Philly. Her idea is to take her two loves, animals and fitness, and focus
on the overweight pets in Philly. She plans to team up with veterinarians
in the area and help slim down their overweight clients. Of course she
plans to get married, have a mini-van full of sport-loving kids, and manage
her doggie fitness club.
Philadelphia Sports Training Center is pleased to welcome Jaki into
sports management and the sports industry as a career path for humans or for
animals. She is a very warm, fun, and energetic person that will
provide PSTC with the support it needs to reach out to all student-athletes
that need a little inspiration from someone that is compassionate and
understanding about their dreams, goals, and needs. |
