Player of the Week Spotlight by PRowl Week 8 The PFL’s spotlight student-athlete of the week from Saturday, June 28 is West Philadelphia’s 17 year-old John Melvin. Melvin will be entering his senior year at Overbrook High School with a 2.0 GPA, and believes that school is important because it is essential to attend college. Melvin’s favorite subject in school is chemistry because he likes the challenges it faces him with. In order to begin the college application process, Melvin will be taking the SATS soon. Melvin plans to buckle down and focus so he can improve his grades before he graduates. Melvin is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He plays in the PFL for the Overbrook Panthers as a wide receiver and free safety. He has been playing football for six years and is looking to play in college at Syracuse University or Temple University. As he prepares for his college career, Melvin keeps reminding himself and his team to take each game as it comes. After college, he would love to get drafted and play in the NFL. Melvin loves the competition that the PFL offers and likes that the players can work on their focus and discipline on the field. Melvin is planning to participate in the PFL’s clean-up on August 15 and is looking forward to attending camps and getting ready for the fall season with his coaches and team. The Dallas Cowboys are Melvin’s favorite NFL team and the Carolina Panthers’ wide receiver, Steve Smith, is his favorite player. Melvin admires Smith because he is smaller too, allowing Melvin to learn a great deal by watching him. Melvin’s mom is his role model because she is extremely supportive and works very hard to provide everything for him and his brother. In three words, Melvin describes himself as hardworking, dedicated and a leader; and his Overbrook teammates describe him as “fast.” If Melvin could give advice to middle school football players, he would tell them that “everyone has to work as a team.” Melvin is honored that he has been named student-athlete of the week. ”It’s nice to get recognized for all the hard work that you do.” Week 4 The PFL’s spotlight student-athlete of the week from Saturday, June 21 is James Fowler. Fowler is a 16 year-old from North Philadelphia, and will be a junior at George Washington High School in the fall. Fowler has a GPA of 2.7 and feels that school is important to him because he wants to advance to college and become a teacher. His favorite subject in school is history, because it comes easily to him and he enjoys learning about all the different things that have happened in the past. As he enters the second half of his high school career, Fowler is planning to take the SATs in order to begin his college search. He will also work on raising his GPA and making first honors by keeping up with all of his homework assignments. Playing for Team Modell’s, Fowler is 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 195 pounds and plays tight end and middle linebacker. He has been playing football since he was eight years-old and would love to play for Notre Dame at the collegiate level. Fowler says that playing in the PFL is a lot of fun, and it gives him a chance to take part in additional football training sessions. The PFL helps him and his teammates through offering tough matches, allowing his team to learn more from the others. Fowler would like to participate in the city clean-ups the PFL has planned for the summer, plans to attend various football camps and has just returned from a leadership camp. Fowler is also working out and practicing with his high school team during the off season. A goal he has set for his last two years of high school? Fowler plans to help his team win a city championship before he graduates. The Philadelphia Eagles are Fowler’s favorite football team because they’re from his home city, and his favorite football player is the Chicago Bears’ middle linebacker, Brian Urlacher, because he is “one of the best.” His parents play a very important part in his education and sports because they drive him to do everything at his best and his mom makes him study hard. Fowler’s dad is his role model because he taught him everything he knows about the game. In three words, Fowler describes himself as: smart, funny and athletic. Fowler’s teammates see him as a tough middle linebacker out on the field. As Fowler gives advice to middle school football players, he tells them to “stick to one sport. That way you can be the best at it.” Fowler is happy to receive student-athlete of the week as this is his second time being honored. He was awarded it before during the season and would love to have the title again. Week 3
